Democratizing Sound Measurement & Acoustic Science
We believe that precision sound level metering, environmental noise monitoring, and hearing conservation tools should be freely accessible to everyone, everywhere. Built with pure Web Audio API digital signal processing and an uncompromising commitment to user privacy.
Meet the Founder & Lead Acoustic Engineer
DecibeldBMeter was conceptualized and developed by an experienced acoustic researcher committed to bridging the divide between high-end laboratory instrumentation and everyday web accessibility.

Dr. Kofi Mensah-Adeyemi
Acoustic Research Engineer • Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Specialist
“Acoustic safety shouldn't depend on having a $1,500 handheld sound level meter. By combining high-resolution browser Web Audio pipelines with rigorous Root Mean Square mathematics, we empower teachers, factory workers, audio producers, and homeowners to evaluate their sound environments instantly, without compromising privacy.”
The Genesis of DecibeldBMeter
Throughout his academic work in environmental noise propagation and occupational health, Dr. Mensah-Adeyemi consistently observed that noise pollution was one of the most widespread yet neglected public health crises. While industrial facilities require certified Class-1 sound level meters, individuals living near construction sites, transit corridors, loud venues, or noisy workspaces rarely had affordable means to quantify noise risks.
In 2024, Kofi set out to engineer an open web tool that removes all friction. Traditional smartphone apps frequently bundle predatory ad trackers, require excessive permissions, or charge subscription fees for basic decibel graphs. DecibeldBMeter was created as an antidote: a lean, ultra-fast web application that performs 100% ephemeral sound analysis inside the user's own browser RAM.
Built on Four Uncompromising Pillars
Every algorithm, interface element, and architectural decision in DecibeldBMeter is guided by these principles.
1. Absolute Zero-Knowledge Audio Privacy
Your microphone input is processed purely in client-side memory using modern JavaScript Float32 arrays. Not a single byte of audio stream, voice recording, or background noise is ever transmitted over the network or written to permanent storage. When you close the tab, the entire pipeline is instantly destroyed.
2. Public Health & Hearing Protection
Prolonged exposure to sounds exceeding 85 dBA causes permanent, irreversible sensorineural hearing damage. We actively incorporate National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and OSHA guidelines, educating users about permissible exposure time limits and dynamic exchange rate rules.
3. Scientific Integrity & Transparency
We maintain complete transparency regarding the physical realities of consumer microphone hardware. We provide customizable calibration offsets, detailed technical documentation of our Root Mean Square (RMS) formulae, and honest disclaimers about when a certified Class-1 meter is required.
4. Universal & Frictionless Access
Sound safety should never sit behind a paywall, an account registration gate, or app store installation barriers. DecibeldBMeter works seamlessly in all standard modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) on any desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone without demanding downloads.
The DecibeldBMeter Digital Signal Engine
How our client-side software transforms analog physical air pressure waves into accurate decibel readings in real time.
Sound pressure fluctuations vibrate the internal microphone diaphragm, generating miniscule electrical voltages. Our engine requests a high-fidelity media stream via navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia with browser automated audio processing (noise suppression, echo cancellation, automatic gain control) explicitly disabled to preserve untampered acoustic dynamics.
The raw audio stream is piped into a dedicated Web Audio AudioContext running an AnalyserNode. We continuously pull 2,048-point Float32 time-domain sample arrays representing instantaneous waveform amplitudes bounded between -1.0 and +1.0.
Because sound waves fluctuate symmetrically above and below the zero baseline, simple arithmetic averaging equals zero. We calculate true acoustic power by squaring each individual sample, computing the mathematical mean of the squared values, and taking the square root: RMS = √(∑(sample²) / N).
Human hearing responds logarithmically rather than linearly. We translate linear RMS energy into decibels relative to full scale (dBFS) using dB = 20 × log10(RMS), and apply user-calibrated acoustic offsets to align measurements with real-world Sound Pressure Levels (SPL).
